Say Good Night To the Elephants, Gracie

Gerogegracie My favorite headline of the day...No, the week...Heck, the year:

"BURNS AND ALLEN CONCEDE, DEMOCRATS CONTROL SENATE"

It leads one to ask: Do Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello and Nichols & May mean nothing to the GOP anymore?

The headline of course refers to outgoing senators Conrad Burns of Montana and George Allen of Virginia, rather than the great and beloved comedy team of George Burns and Gracie Allen. But if you use a little imagination, you can almost see the latest Burns & Allen hitting the road to do their Branson, Missouri-style act -- Burns smoking a cigar and playing it straight, Allen acting the part of the not-so-ditzy foil and cracking wise. Seems like a natural next step for both men. And they will, after all, seemingly have plenty of time come January to pursue this new career path.

Conrad_3Allen_4 I think I may just be onto something here. And if I'm not, then perhaps it means it's time for the rubber room.

Burns & Allen are in good company; on election night, the San Fran Chron ran an online hed that said:

JEW AND BLACK LEAD

(One of the local races featured candidates named Ed Jew and Ron Black.)

I screencapped it on my website, because I didn't know how long it would stay up. Not long, as it turned out. But it's still up here:
