Okay, So it Ain't Quite the Oscars...
In case you missed it, the Television Critics Association handed out the 23rd Annual TCA Awards at the Beverly Hilton on Saturday night, and their Program of the Year was (drum roll, please)...NBC's "Heroes." Yes, "Heroes." But in the TCA Awards universe, there is a significant difference between "Program of the Year" and, say, the best comedy or drama. Were I giving out these awards myself, I might have instead honored "Heroes" with an "Outstanding Achievement in Television That Defies Traditional Categorization," but they obviously didn't ask me.
Here's the full list:
Program of the Year: "Heroes" (NBC)
Outstanding Achievement in News and Information: "Planet Earth" (Discovery Channel)
Outstanding Achievement in Movies and Miniseries: "Planet Earth"
Outstanding Achievement in Shows About the Earth: "Planet Earth" (just kidding, it's not an actual category, just wanted to see if you were paying attention -- and you aren't)
Outstanding Achievement in Children's Programming: "Kyle XY" (ABC Family)
Outstanding New Program: "Friday Night Lights" (NBC)
Career Achievement: Mary Tyler Moore
Outstanding Individual Achievement in Drama: Michael C. Hall, "Dexter" (Showtime)
Outstanding Individual Achievement in Comedy: Alec Baldwin, "30 Rock" (NBC)
Outstanding Achievement in Comedy: "The Office" (NBC)
Outstanding Achievement in Drama: "The Sopranos" (HBO)
Heritage Award: "The Sopranos"
One interesting note to add. While the nation's TV critics collectively bleat rather persistently about how the lousy TV Academy voters never have nominated HBO's "The Wire" or Sci-Fi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica," Tom O'Neil of the indispensable awards blog Gold Derby points out here that the TCA never has honored either show with a trophy, either. But it has feted "Heroes" -- and I mean, honestly, shouldn't that be enough?
Christina Aguilera cradles her flag-encased infant son Max Liron Bratman while crooning "America the Beautiful" to him in a public service announcement promoting the kickoff of this year's Rock the Vote campaign. Calls immediately went out to presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama to begin wearing a similarly clad baby on his lapel during all campaign stops or risk being tagged as unpatriotic.
