CW makes BFD out of 'OMFG' to help peddle 'GG'

OmfgSo you may have seen that The CW is marking the April 21 return of the not-really-a-hit "Gossip Girl" in original episodes by producing promos that show two of its characters doin' the dirty deed, accompanied by the letters "OMFG" (which in Internet-speak stands for "Oh My Fucking God!"). You can't say the "F" word on network TV, of course, so this works as both a canny way around the rules and a sly grab for the hip young Web-savvy audience that the series is so feverishly courting.

I wholeheartedly approve of the idea of thumbing one's nose in the collective faces of the self-appointed indecency police, not to mention the FCC. A relaxing of certain language standards, particularly for later at night, is long overdue for broadcast television, in my view. I'm just not sure that "Gossip Girl" is necessarily the foundation upon which I'd look to build any free speech monuments. It has generated barely enough viewers to justify renewal for a second season next fall while presiding as a too-cool-for-the-room piece of preening sap that makes "The O.C." look like "Masterpiece Theatre."

Given this unassailable truth, I'd like to propose the following promotional alternatives that the CW marketing department may want to consider once "OMFG" runs its course -- all of them using the same initial-rich gambit.

--"WATIA" ("Who Are These Idiots Anyway?")

--"ICBWSOTA" ("I Can't Believe We're Still On The Air")

--"CFTSSFTS" ("Come For The Sex, Stay For The Stupidity")

--"WWMCD" ("What Would Miley Cyrus Do?")

--"WRDWLC" ("We're Replacing Dialogue With Lame Cyberslang!")

--"DMUBWTL" ("Don't Make Us Beg -- Whoops Too Late")

And finally...

--"WWNTDTCIWWOC" ("We Wouldn't Need To Do This Crap If We Were On Cable")
