In HIS life, the best is 'In My Life'
By Barry Garron
TCA -- Sir George Martin, who produced all of the Beatles' records and many others, is regarded by many as the greatest producer of all time. He came to the TCA press tour Saturday to talk up his latest project, "On Record: The Soundtrack of Our Lives."
The title doesn't explain the show well, so I'll try. It's a look at the emergence of popular music in the 20th century. The show will have vintage footage as well as interviews with artists of pop, jazz, classical, R&B, folk, rock and country. It will be on this fall and Kevin Spacey will narrate.
Naturally, Sir Martin was peppered with questions about the Beatles. The one that made him pause the longest before answering was which of all the Beatles songs he likes best. "In My Life," he finally answered. He said it was the evocative power of the lyrics.
Sir Martin also was asked if there was any truth to the years-old rumor that "American Idol" had been after him to serve as a mentor to contestants. "No," he responded quickly and bluntly. "The show makes a lot of money," he said, but "it's not my cup of tea."
Are there rock groups today that he particularly enjoys? Yes indeed. Sir Martin said his two favorites were Coldplay and Radiohead.
